Gastro-Intestinal Disorders-Nutritional Intervention

Gastro-Intestinal Disorders affect millions of people worldwide, varying from mild to severe in symptoms and prognosis, which has a significant economic impact comprising healthcare cost and work absenteeism, in addition to patients’ decreased quality of life. The organic disease includes gastro-oesophagal Reflux Disease (GERD), H. Pylori Infection, and Colorectal Cancer, while functional digestive disorders include functional dyspepsia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Functional Constipation. The GI tract, including the liver and pancreas, is a complex system whose function is to process a wide range of nutrients and other products enabling their absorption as well as detoxification and excretion. Nutrition has been considered as one of the most neglected, but vital aspects of gastroenterology. Many Gastrointestinal diseases result from deficiency or excess of specific nutrients in normal individuals. In allergic or susceptible subjects, diseases such as food allergy, disaccharidase intolerance, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy may occur with intake of normal daily requirements.

The course focuses on the latest evidence-based updates in the dietary management of various GI disorders, which should provide dietitians with a foundation in the pathology, diagnosis and medical nutritional management of common as well as complex GI diseases and disorders while training the dietitian to appropriately assess, implement and monitor a nutritional care plan (NCP).
